Shanghai Normal University was founded in 1954 as Shanghai Normal College; In 1956, it was expanded to Shanghai First Normal University and Shanghai Second Normal University; In 1958, the two universities merged to establish Shanghai Normal University; In 1972, the five universities merged to establish Shanghai Normal University; In 1978, Shanghai Normal University was restored; In 1984, it was renamed as Shanghai Normal University; In 1994, the new Shanghai Normal University was merged with Shanghai Normal University of Technology. Shanghai Normal University is a key university in Shanghai and a pilot unit for the construction of high-level local universities (disciplines) in Shanghai.
